The Medical Devices segment produces a broad range of innovative products used primarily by health care professionals in the fields of orthopaedics, neurovascular, surgery, vision care, diabetes care, infection prevention, cardiovascular disease, sports medicine, and aesthetics. This segment is comprised of our Global Medical Solutions, Global Orthopaedics and Global Surgery Groups.


General Manager Medical Devices South Africa 

Location: Midrand


The General Manager is responsible for leading the sales, marketing and commercial Medical Devices organization for South Africa. This is a full P&L accountability including indirect leadership of shared functions, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain…. Size of business is $82m in 2019 and the total organisation comprises of approx. 191 employees in the commercial organisation and indirectly approx. 450 employees in the Medical Devices Legal Entity.


This role delivers as well as establishes and accomplishes other important business objectives as required. Ensures short – and long-term effectiveness of the organization by attracting, developing and retaining talent. Communicates values, strategies, and objectives; assigns accountabilities; monitors and appraises job results; develops a climate that encourages open dialogue and engagement: Leads organization through changes.

 

This role is pivotal in shaping the external environment and engaging with external stakeholders to continue to improve direction and decisions in the healthcare industry.

 

This role also plays a pivotal role in governance of that site and statutory responsibilities as per regional needs.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Accountable for developing and coordinating the implementation of the overarching growth strategy for MD in South Africa
  • Formulates and communicates overall business objectives and strategic plans
  • Drives transformation in Medical Devices, aligned to government initiatives and requirements
  • Makes timely decisions and balances short-term needs with longer term strategic impact
  • Establishes and manages budgets, forecasts and reports
  • Appraises and evaluates the results of overall operations regularly and systematically and reports these results.
  • Maximizes region’s performance and productivity from insight generation to strategy development; studies marketplace trends and changes taking place for implications to business
  • Cultivates relationships with key decision makers at hospitals and leads relationships with strategic accounts in the country
  • Manages relationships with partners in the country
  • Lead a fully integrated business with end-to-end value chain responsibilities – responsible for, but no direct accountability for supply chain, HR, finance, and operations. Responsible for leading across the matrix to achieve results.
  • Builds organizational capability, and allocates appropriate resources to achieve growth goals
  • Creates the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization's current activities and its projected growth.
  • Plays a key role in shaping the external environment.
  • Represents J&J Medical devices in the external market (e.g., regulatory, media, distributors and other stakeholders)
  • Builds an engaged high-performance workforce and establishes a plan for continuous staff development. Leads and coaches the executive team.
  • Conducts business activities in compliance with ethics and legal requirements.
  • Ensure culture of Quality and Compliance engrained in every aspect of the business.

The Qualifying Requirements are:
  • University degree 
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience (diversity of experience either Sectors or Geographies is a preference).
  • Sales and marketing background with operations knowledge
  • Strong strategic and execution skills
  • Experience from a similar managerial position, experience with leading people
  • Able to influence in a matrix organisation
  • Ability to lead within volatility, complexity and ambiguity
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong sales and negotiation skills
  • Excellent Decision-making skills
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office – word, excel, PowerPoint
  • „Can do“ and „winning“ attitude
